The initial facial treatment using botulinum toxin type A was Botox, then came Dysport, and as of July 2011, Xeomin was approved by the Food and Drug administration (FDA) for use in the United States.
The ultimate goal from these products is to look younger by reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Neither Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin were specifically for the use on facial wrinkles. They were developed as a therapeutic drug for nerve and muscle disturbances, but are now being used by doctors all over the world, as a temporary solution for facial lines and wrinkles. Each of the drugs has similarities, and some subtle differences.
Xeomin Administration And What To Expect
Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) was formulated and manufactured by Merz Pharmaceuticals, LLC., and approved to treat abnormal head positions and neck pain, associated with cervical dystonia (CD). It was also approved to treat blepharospasm, or abnormal spasms of the eyelids. It has evolved into facial aesthetics, treating facial lines and wrinkles, by blocking nerve to muscle signals temporarily. Xeomin blocks the release of acetylcholine, the chemical messenger to the muscle, causing the muscle to decrease activity, or temporarily paralyze it, thus smoothing out wrinkles from muscle contraction.
Merz Pharmaceuticals isolated the therapeutic component from botulinumtoxintypeA, removing extra proteins or toxin complex, by chromatography, which lessens the risk of adverse reactions in the patient. Xeomin is injected directly into the affected muscles, as are Botox and Dysport. The pain of injection varies, depending on muscle function, extent of injections, and individual personal reaction to the drug. The total dose per muscle is decided by the certified professional, and your condition. Xeomin generally takes 7 days before seeing any improvement, and generally lasts up to 3 months.
Risks And Side Effects
The most common side effects listed by the company, pertain only to injections for treating blepharospasm and cervical dystonia. The side effects most experienced are:
- drooping eyelids
- dry eye
- dry mouth
- difficulty swallowing
- neck pain
- muscle weakness
- injection site pain
- muscle or joint pain.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Certain people are not candidates for Xeomin injections, and could risk life-threatening side effects if they are injected with any drug from botulinumtoxintypeA. People who should not consider facial treatment with Xeomin are people having these conditions:
- Have experienced an adverse reaction to Botox or Dysport
- Muscle or Nerve Disorder
- Respiratory Difficulties such as asthma or emphysema
- Bleeding problems, or are taking blood thinning medications
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have had an injection of Botox or Dysport previously
Xeomin vs Botox vs Dysport
Xeomin, Dysport, and Botox all block signals from the nerves to the specific muscles, when injected, temporarily paralyzing the muscles from contracting. Repetitive contractions of muscles in the face lead to some of the facial lines and wrinkles in which these drugs treat. Xeomin is more like Botox, in the effect, and cost, and Dysport seems to deliver more immediate results. Xeomin, as Dysport is naked, meaning that there are no additives, or protein complexes, so they will stay in the body longer, and may cause the effects to last longer. Because all three drugs are derived from the same source, patients may experience the same side effects, in varying extremes.
One major difference between Xeomin, Dysport, and Botox, is that Xeomin does not need to be refrigerated, as do the other drugs. This may provide wider distribution of this drug. These drugs should never be used simultaneously or interchangeably, due to possible adverse reactions. Special care in screening should be taken, to make sure that you are a candidate for any of these drugs. There is also great potential for any of these drugs to spread from the intended muscle site, so it is important to monitor health symptoms in all three drugs, and contact a medical professional when necessary.
The few reviews that were available were mixed, and most had just recently gotten the injection, so it may have been too early to judge. The cervical dystonia patient indicated that Xeomin seemed to last longer than Botox. Another reviewer stated that effects were felt sooner than Botox, and a negative review reported pain of injection and headaches following a Xeomin injection. It is difficult to tell whether subtle differences are due to the brand of drug, or the body make-up in individuals. In any event, it is of utmost importance to have a certified, trained doctor to administer injections if you do choose to temporarily eliminate wrinkles in this manner.
