What is Emervel?
Galderma, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, developed and released Emervel in January, 2011. Emervel is a dermal filler used to fill in facial lines, and to compensate for the loss of volume in facial contour. Emervel is categorized into five different products, which target specific facial areas to restore. Made from hyaluronic acid (HA), Emervel has been technologically improved to integrate into the appropriate levels of skin better, and to last longer.
Emervel VS other Dermal Fillers
Emervel filler is made in a laboratory using hyaluronic acid, and without the use of animal products. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is what makes the skin look plump and full. Bacterial fermentation is then used after the hyaluronic acid is cross-linked with Butanediol Diglycidyl Ether (BDDE), in order to form a gel-like substance. The formula is then purified through dialysis before distribution.
Emervel is very similar to other dermal fillers which are composed of hyaluronic acid. The difference in Emervel is due to its trademarked Optimal Balance Technology, which provides for more immediate restoration of skin, and much lower rejection rates. Because Emervel is made without animal products, it is less likely to cause an adverse reaction when injected, and because of its improved gel-like texture, it molds into the existing skin level more fully. A combination of these differences which make up its Optimal Balance Technology, seem to offer longer-lasting results.
Emervel dermal filler has a range of five different products which are specialized to enhance certain areas of facial skin. Four of the five products are made with lidocaine, to provide comfort when injected. All products are injected from pre-measured 1-2 ml, ultra thin needles for accuracy. The range of Emervel products are as follows:
- Emervel Touch is for fine or superficial periorbital lines which occur around the outer eyes. Emervel Touch is the only product which is not made with lidocaine included.
- Emervel Classic is used to produce a medium lifting effect for moderate lines and wrinkles. It works especially well on nasolabial folds, or the parentheses around the mouth and below the nose.
- Emervel Lips is used to restore the plumpness of the lips, and to define the lip border.
- Emervel Deep is used as a high-volume lifting effect to smooth deeper nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. It is injected deeper into the dermal layer, and integrates with present skin cells.
- Emervel Volume provides very high-volume lifting effects for those who have lost facial volume due to the aging process. Emervel Volume works well to restore volume to cheekbones, cheeks, and the chin area.
Emervel Injection Procedure
The procedure of Emervel injection is very similar to all other dermal fillers. Galderma provides pre-measured injection needles for accuracy, and the procedure can take from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area to be treated. Regular dermal filler precautions should be followed such as no blood thinners before injections. It is not recommended for pregnant or breast-feeding patients, or if you are allergic to hyaluronic acid, or lidocaine.
Some side effects which may be experienced are swelling, redness, and itching, but there is usually no down time. Any side effects will usually dissipate within days. After treatment, it is recommended not to be exposed to extreme heat or cold. It is also suggested not to make severe facial expression movement or to use make up for the first 12 hours after injections. Massaging or rubbing the injected area is also not recommended.
Emervel contains the local anesthetic lidocaine, to make the injections more comfortable. Emervel’s gel-like texture feels natural, and integrates well into the existing skin usually within 6 to 12 hours, so that it does not feel lumpy, or hard. Injections can last from 6 to 12 months, before another injection is required to sustain results. Emervel fillers can be used together, but there is a waiting period of at least 6 months between injections into the same site.
Pros and Cons
Emervel is a relatively new dermal filler, therefore it has yet to be approved by the FDA. It has passed European market regulations however, and its clinical trials have shown Emervel to be easy to inject, works on all skin types, and is better tolerated by patients. It has exhibited minor side effects, and seems to integrate very well into the various skin layers. The cost of Emervel injection is relative to the area and severity of facial correction to be treated.
A major bonus of Emervel is that it does last longer in some patients, therefore necessitating fewer injections to retain the improvement. The results can be seen within hours of the injection, and with lidocaine added to the hyaluronic acid gel, these injections are painless. As with any dermal injection, it is up to the patient to find a qualified doctor or dermatologist, in order to receive the best results, and Emervel is not a permanent cosmetic treatment.
