Dermal Fillers for Acne Scars

One of the most frustrating skin issues that most people go through is acne. Most of us have learned how to cope with the occasional blemish, but scars left behind by acne is hard to live with.

Especially those pitted and depressed acne scars because they can interfere with the appearance of healthy, radiant skin. Not to mention that textural problem areas on our skin are hard to mask with cosmetics. Acne scarring often leaves skin looking damaged, dull, dry and generally unhealthy, which in turn makes us look older. It’s time to do something about it!

Most people start with creams like Shea butter, that are generally known to work for scars, but take time to see lasting results. With the advancement of dermal fillers, there are great solutions for temporarily resolving acne scars. It makes sense that dermal fillers are used to resolve acne scarring because the original function of fillers is to restore volume, so using volumizing treatments to smooth out your skins texture will surely eliminate the visible signs of scarring for up to 6-8 months.

There are several different dermal fillers available, however, majority of dermatologists work with hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. This is a popular choice for a few different reasons;

  • HA is a naturally occurring substance that can be found in almost all living things, but in humans is found in the connective tissues and fluid surrounding your eyes. This also means that the substance is compatible with our body.
  • When the gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues, filling in depressed areas to resolve textured scarring. This gel filler is easy to mold into place to get the smoothest results. As a bonus, HA also brings water to the surface of the skin to keep it looking fresh and supple.
  • HA fillers have an added bonus of being reversible. If a patient is not happy with the results, it is not necessary to live with unsatisfactory results for 6 months. A substance called Hyaluronidase, which is also an injectable enzyme that speeds up the natural breakdown of HA.
Dermal fillers are a great solution for temporarily resolving acne scars, however, some fillers work better than others depending on the scar type. There are 3 main types of scars; ice pick, boxcar and rolling scars. Dermal fillers are generally a good solution for boxcar and rolling scars, but are not commonly used to resolve ice pick scars because these scars are deep.
